Romantic Honeymoon Ideas: You Could Tour Central Europe, And Do So On A Budget!
There’s nothing like going to Europe for a romantic honeymoon! Gerald and Carlissa spent their honeymoon in Austria, Italy, and Hungary, and had an unforgettable trip. It was also a very affordable trip, which may seem surprising, but you can have it both ways!
We decided to spend our 8-day honeymoon in Central Europe, namely Austria, Italy, and Hungary. I could hardly imagine a better trip. Flying into Vienna was the easiest, as its international connections are excellent. Since we’d both been to Vienna previously, we decided against spending any of our time there. So we immediately headed towards the Salzkammergut, an Austrian region in the heart of the Alps. Because we were on a tight budget, we made extensive use of regional trains, particularly in Austria. The Einfach Raus ticket, as it’s called, allows up to five people (I believe) unlimited travel in a day on regional trains (as well as local S-Bahn trains) for 26 Euros. This meant it took us much longer to get from point A to point B, but the savings were substantial. In the Salzkammergut, we stayed at the perfect hotel, the Haus Rye, run by a British family, in the town of Obertraun. We could look out our room’s window and see the mountains towering over a quaint landscape of farmland and creeks. This was in late June, and the weather was absolute perfection; surprisingly cool, especially in the evenings, and perfectly sunny. After a couple days in Austria, we went on to Venice. There we stayed in a private room in a hostel; Venice’s accommodation rates are outrageous. But it’s hard to imagine a more romantic city! We spent hours every day wandering the streets, thinking about what the place must have been like centuries earlier, stopping for gelato whenever we got overheated. We didn’t get a chance to go out to the islands, but that’s a priority if we’re ever back in Venice. After Venice, we made our way to Hungary. We had two stops in Hungary; the first of these was at Lake Balaton. This is a huge vacation destination for lots of Germans, Russians, and Hungarians, so it was a very tourist-friendly place. The one thing to note, however, is that this is the only place on our trip where speaking English didn’t help too much; we had to rely on German to communicate. Here we stayed again at a lovely hotel, not far from the water, in the town of Keszthely. Lastly we went to Budapest, which is an amazing city. We loved how exotic and yet familiar it managed to feel all at the same time. I would definitely recommend staying there. That’s where all the trendy restaurant and nightlife options are. But the one thing you simply can’t miss in Budapest is the baths. We went to the Szechenyi baths, in a park in Budapest. It is an absolutely delightful way to spend a few hours. All in all, we spent around $1,500 for our 8 days. The trip could perhaps have been made slightly more luxurious by the addition of a little more money, but we were for the most part satisfied with our accommodations (except for in Venice), and we ate at least one big, delicious meal a day (with smaller meals or snacks the rest of the day). All of our destinations are well worth checking out!
