Need a Cheap Caribbean Honeymoon?
Think you can’t have a great honeymoon on a budget? Think again!
Read about Audrey’s relatively frugal but adventurous honeymoon in the Virgin Islands:
My husband and I went to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands for our honeymoon. We stayed at Chenay Bay beach resort. It has little cottages that house a kitchenette, a bed, a TV, and a bathroom. Overall, our honeymoon cost about $2100 with airfare and a resort. The car was about $100 for the full week. We saved money by eating only one meal a day out. We had breakfast in our kitchenette, and then we alternated spending money at a restaurant between lunch and dinner. Our kitchenette had a stove, fridge, microwave, and sink, so we could make basic meals. We went to a grocery store our first full day there and loaded up. Keep in mind prices are more expensive in general on an island than in the States. For instance, a gallon of milk was $5.50. It still was cheaper, though, to eat two meals “at home”, if you will. Also, we tried to research everything that was free. We decided against a few activities we would have had to pay for, and we focused in our places we could go at no cost. There were a lot of beautiful beaches and scenic locales that we could go walking in and explore. There was also a fort in Christiansted that was only $4.00 or so per person. Also, we liked walking around in the shops and not necessarily buying. And, it was meant to be a relaxing trip for us, so we spent a lot of time on the beach or by the pool at our resort. Since we’d gone to the grocery store, we could bring a snack from our room instead of always having the resort’s bar bring us food, although a few times we ordered from them. The bartender was also really nice and would make drinks and offer samples to us while lounging. We also only brought so much cash and had to ration it. We had a rule of no ATMs unless there was an emergency, which thankfully did not occur. Our restaurant budget was $100/day for a seven-day trip, but most days I think we stayed well under it. A few times we went to a nicer dinner and probably spent close to our limit.
